From battling disinformation to dealing with online abuse and mental health crisis, journalists around the globe are feeling the impact of the covid-19 pandemic.

At our digital journalism conference Newsrewired this week (1 December 2020), Julie Posetti, global research director of the International Centre for Journalist (ICFJ), gave a keynote speech on how covid-19 has impacted both journalists and news organisations, with one eye on how to enter 2021 with renewed strength and determination.

She pulls findings from ICFJs recent research in collaboration with the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University. Together, the organisations launched the Journalism and the Pandemic Project in April 2020, that surveyed more than 1,400 English-speaking journalists in 125 countries. The findings offer one major takeaway: post-pandemic journalism must be mission-driven, public service-focused and audience-centred.

In this week’s special episode of the Journalism.co.uk podcast, we bring you the highlights from the keynote. According to Posetti, the big challenge for the media next year will be continuing to fight disinformation and building closer relationships with our readers, at a time when newsrooms are scattered and journalists are stressed out.
